Haven Green is loved as an attractive green space at the heart of Ealing Town Centre. It also has an important role to play in nature conservation.
However, the very intensive use of the green by the public is putting an enormous stress on the trees and grass that make it such an attractive place. Many of the grassy areas have become compacted by the large numbers of pedestrians on the Green. The most striking visual evidence is around the bus stops on the diagonal road where the grass is completely eroded. But compaction also affects the health and vitality of the trees, some of which have had to be removed.
Other threats to the green environment arise from disease and vandalism. Previous improvements have not always succeeded.
FoHG thinks that the Green needs more sustained management to improve the quality of the green environment. We need to start with a comprehensive management plan.
